Airflow Measurement for Air Cleaners, Purifiers and Sanitizers

Airflow Measurement for Air Cleaners, Purifiers and Sanitizers

The covid-19 pandemic has generated an increased interest in airflow and cleaning the air.  Air cleaners, also referred to as air purifiers or sanitizers, use differing technologies including HEPA filtration, activated carbon filtration, ultraviolet (UV) germicidal irradiation, or multiple technologies such as filtration with UV disinfection.  The ASHRAE Position Document on Filtration and Air Cleaning provides information on these and other technologies.

Degree Controls has small form factor airflow sensors at a price point compatible with air cleaning devices.  Our compact F66x Board Mount airflow sensors are designed to measure and monitor airflow, in real time, within dense electronic systems and enclosures.  These digital air velocity and air temperature sensors can be soldered directly to a printed circuit board, or plugged into a surface-mount socket for easy removal.  Small footprint F66x sensors are available in horizontal (F661/F663) and vertical profiles (F660/F662) with choice of input voltage.

By designing Degree Controls board mount airflow sensors into air cleaner devices, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can offer performance improvements:

  • Optimize UV dosing by monitoring flow rate and adjusting fan speed
  • Save energy and extend bulb life by sensing airflow presence/absence for active or standby mode selection
  • Identify filter change out intervals by monitoring air velocity through filter media

Increase the strength of your product by integrating air velocity sensing into your air cleaning and UVGI disinfection systems.  Contact Degree Controls today to learn more about our board mount sensors and our embedded platform of air velocity sensing.
