HEPA Filter Leakage Testing

°C SPAR Sensor Pole Array for Multipoint Air Velocity and Temperature Measurement

HEPA (high efficiency particulate air filters) filters and HEPA filter integrity are critical to air filtration systems in industries including pharmaceutical, semiconductor, food, and nuclear. HEPA filters are most effective when used at their rated airflow resistance and face velocity, and various standards have been implemented for certification and in-situ qualification testing of HEPA filters.

For instance, Part 3 of ISO 14644 for measuring cleanroom performance includes an installed filter system leakage test, and SME AG-1, Code on Nuclear Air and Gas Treatment discusses airflow distribution testing on HEPA filter housings utilizing radial filters. Test methods include establishing face velocity and uniformity by measuring a suitable number of points across a filter face, as well as measuring air velocity upstream and downstream of filters and filter banks to verify system flow rates.

Air Velocity Testing in HVAC Ducts

The °C SPAR Sensor Pole Array System from Degree Controls measures air velocity and temperature at multiple points simultaneously, and is used to measure performance of HEPA filters and HVAC systems. It is a linear array of constant temperature anemometers, capable of measuring air velocity with ±3% accuracy. °C SPARs are built to client specified dimensions, including tube length, sensor quantity, pitch, and calibration range. They can be arranged in a symmetrical grid pattern, or spaced equally and radially at the inlet or outlet side of a HEPA filter, to collect the airflow data needed to demonstrate uniform velocity through a filter. Multiple USB outputs connect the °C SPAR linear array system to °C Port data acquisition instruments, and ˚C SPAR works cohesively with AccuTrac™ software, enabling real-time analytics, data logging, and reporting for Windows® OS users.

Whether you’re filtering the air in aseptic process areas, or using banks of HEPA filters and prefilters to improve WTP (Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant) safety, °C SPAR air velocity measurement arrays offer significant time savings in both setup and measurement, and eliminate inaccuracies associated with positioning single point sensors.
